Today as I read the Gospel of John I noticed for the first time this sentence: “After Judas took the morsel, Satan entered him. “ We know that Jesus gave him that bread. We know that Jesus was sharing His body with His disciples. Did Judas eat the morsel and then was entered by Satan?
At first I was very bothered by that statement. Could Jesus have planned Judas’ betrayal because he needed it to continue His objective?
I never would agree with that assumption. Jesus is pure love. I believe He would never sacrifice another for His needs. Unfortunately those thoughts have been shared with me several times. Darkness can blind our belief. How sad!
Jesus I believe, help my unbelief!!!!!

Stories like today’s gospel help us live in the dark world we face everyday, when sometimes there are no answers, except “Wait.” Our questions and doubts won’t overcome us. Surely, the first disciples wondered as you do. Faith is not a clear path. If it were it would not be faith. The Passion of Jesus is filled with questions like this.

    Judas supped at Jesus’ table,

    Pretended to be a disciple,

    But greed filled his eyes,

To see love he was not able.

    His choice to accept silver,

    giving him a comfortable life,

    turned him away from Jesus,

the One reliable strength in strife.

Judas-like I am tempted to seek

    Satisfactory temporal comforts.

Create in me a clean heart,

    hold me close,

    make me humble and meek.

Renew in me your Spirit, Lord.
