When Mary hurries off to the hill country, to visit Elizabeth, it is not to confirm what Gabriel has told her, but to celebrate it! Both women have been personally converted by the awesome Power of God. Their ordinary lives– which were “good,” but ultimately headed in the direction of obscurity– will never be ordinary again. From now on their extraordinary lives will proclaim the Greatness of God.
By hurrying to Elizabeth’s side in her elderly Cousin’s hour of need, Mary becomes the first Christian Missionary. She carries the embryonic Christ into the House of Zachariah where the Word of God is joyfully received. Following the Blessed Virgin of Nazareth’s example, Christians– from this day forward– will likewise bear the Good News of Salvation among all the Nations of the Earth.
Hail Mary! May all generations call you “Blessed.”
